Buying boxes for moving

When it comes to packing, storage, and transporting or shipping your precious belongings, packing boxes are essential. But not just any boxes will do the trick. When it comes to choosing the right moving box you need to ensure they are sturdy cardboard boxes that can withstand the demands of your move.

For heavy or delicate items like books and pictures, opt for smaller boxes like the book or wine boxes. This way, you can avoid unnecessary strain and make lifting and carrying a breeze. On the other hand, large boxes are perfect for light or bulky items such as quilts, pillows, and clothing, allowing you to efficiently pack them away and store them.

Remember, choosing the right boxes for the right items is key to a smooth moving experience on the date you move and our guide to moving boxes is the bible to helping you choose.

Alternatives for moving boxes

Cardboard box alternatives include a wide range of items, some of which you might already have. They can give you space, save money, and make the packing process easier.

Do use:

Suitcases and laundry hampers: Perfect for a range of things like packing your clothes and linen.

Plastic storage tubs: Even better if clear and your can pack all those accessories, bathroom and miscellaneous items. Keep these light and not too heavy.

Dressers: It's ok to transport light things inside your furniture, but if it adds too much weight, pack these into a box.

Don’t use:

Garbage bags: People tend to turn to garbage bags as a last resort, but due to the risk of tearing, even with light items, they aren't worth the risk.

Hire or rent plastic boxes

Check out whether you can hire or rent plastic tubs. In Sydney you can hire tubs through a company called Koala Box. They will deliver you your packs to your nominated place or office in Sydney.

Can you get boxes for free?

Yes – There are loads of place where you you can get free boxes that can protect your items when you move. A few places to try and find boxes for free are buy, swap, sell websites like Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace. Other large department stores like OfficeworksBig W, Target, JB Hi Fi and Bunnings also have large boxes that could be used as boxes for your move.

Why it’s good:

Reusing boxes and great for the environment and a great way to save some money.

Why it’s not as popular as buying or hiring cardboard boxes instead:

Some boxes can be deteriorated and may split / create damaged goods. You’ll need to also account for more time and petrol money to go out an pick up boxes to get enough to cover your needs.
